31st October 2016 - Letter to Parents (KS3)

Dear Parents/Carers

I am writing to you to inform you that your son will be sitting KS3 GCSE style examinations in English at the end of each term. These examinations will take place at the end of autumn, spring and will conclude at the end of the summer term.

We will use the results of these papers as an integral part of our planning and preparation to teach the newly reformed GCSE language specification. The paper that your son will sit has been co-designed alongside the GCSE paper. It assesses the same Assessment Objectives in the same sequence, and in similar ways to the assessment strategy set out in the real GCSE examinations.

The purpose of the examinations are to:

• Allow students to become familiar with the skills they require to succeed at GCSE • Help develop confidence with the assessment criteria and the language papers

• Identify strengths and areas of improvement within students’ responses

• Allow teachers to effectively assess the students’ progress – providing insights into how secure students are in their skills development

• Prepare students to answer questions under strict exam conditions

The examination results will remain confidential with class teachers and will not be shared with students. It is important that your son tries his hardest in these examinations, the same as he would in any assessment. In order to create an overall end of year grade, your son will also be examined through a GL test. The GL test is a standardised assessment of pupils’ technical English skills (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and reading comprehension. This is designed for use year on year to support teachers in benchmarking students’ English knowledge and measure their progress over time. This can help in identifying those in need of extra help, as well as those who are particularly able. We will then use the results of the AQA GCSE papers, the GL tests and teacher assessments to generate an overall grade for your son. This will help us to provide an accurate projection of your son’s end of year 11 grade and help us to provide individual learning support to cater to your son’s needs.

If you have any questions or queries regarding these examinations, please do not hesitate to contact me at the email address below.

Yours faithfully,

Miss S Brady
